The Saône links the Rhône, a “southern river”, to the whole of the northern waterways network. By virtue of its strategic position and its peaceful temperament it has always constituted a crucial waterways link. In this guide we follow the whole of the navigable section from Corre to Lyons.

The upper section called the Little Saône is one of France’s most popular tourist waterways. Downstream from Seurre, the Big Saône is a wide lazy river offering interesting ports, good fishing and easy cruising conditions.

To enable boaters to discover the many junction canals which join the Saône, we have added sections of the canal du Centre, the canal de Bourgogne and the canal du Rhône au Rhin. The southern section of the canal de la Marne à la Saône, now called the canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne, is also included in this guide
